Sofia

Sofia is the capital of the Balkan nation of Bulgaria. It’s in the west of the country, below Vitosha Mountain. The city’s landmarks reflect more than 2,000 years of history, including Greek, Roman, Ottoman and Soviet occupation. Medieval Boyana Church has 13th-century frescoes. Built by the Romans in the 4th century, St. George Rotunda Church has medieval and Ottoman decoration dating to the 10th century. Sofia has been an area of human habitation since at least 7000 BC. Being Bulgaria's primate city, Sofia is a hometown of many of the major local universities, cultural institutions and commercial companies. Sofia is one of the top 10 best places for start-up business in the world, especially in IT technologies. Sofia is Europe's most affordable capital to visit.

Sofia City Highlights

Sofia concentrates a significant section of the national higher education capacity, including 109,000 university and college students and 22 of Bulgaria's 51 higher education establishments. These include four of the five highest-ranking national universities- Sofia University, University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy, the Technical University of Sofia, University of National and World Economy and the University of Mining and Geology. A number of research and cultural departments operate within SU, including its own publishing house, botanical gardens, a space research centre, a quantum electronics department, and a Confucius Institute Rakovski Defence and Staff College, the National Academy of Arts, and Sofia Medical University are other major higher education establishments in the city

Pharmaceuticals

The pharmaceutical industry is one of the leading and fastest growing sectors of the Bulgarian economy. Bulgaria was the 28th largest pharmaceutical market in the EU in 2007, accounting for 0.4% of the EU pharmaceutical market (slightly larger than the Slovenian market). Expenses pertaining to specialist therapies are also expected to grow from $201 (€178) in 2015 to more than $225 (€199) per capita within four years. Funding for healthcare in Bulgaria is contributed by compulsory health insurance, administered by the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF). NHIF’s role is to contribute a basic package of health services for the entire population. Germany and France, the largest pharmaceutical markets in the EU, Independently accounted for 18% of the EU market. Between 2005 and 2007, Bulgaria’s consumption of pharmaceutical products raised at an annual average rate of 5.3%, amounting to € 542 million in 2007. Bulgaria’s pharmaceutical expenditure increased at a lower rate than the average EU pharmaceutical consumption, which grew by 6.1% between 2005 and 2007.

   

Nursing

The study is based on critical analysis of the statistical data for nurse professionals in Bulgaria and empirical sociological inquiry organized in the period April 2007 – December 2012. Primary information was collected through direct group self-administered questionnaires distributed to 337 nurses – students in baccalaureate and master programs in Healthcare management at the Medical University of Pleven. The most of them were staff nurses (63%) and 37 per cent were nurse managers.  

 

Immunology

According to the market study, in Bulgaria, €633,000 has been set aside for the bilateral national fund. Among the target areas for the fund, are children & youth, combating drugs and organized crime, promotion of European values and nuclear energy decommissioning.

Neuroscience

The proposed agency for research and innovation under Horizon 2020 will:

Strengthen the EU’s position in science with a dedicated budget of € 24 341 million1.This will provide a boost to top-level research in Europe, including the top European Research Council (ERC). Strengthen industrial leadership in innovation € 17 015 million1. This includes big investment in key technologies, greater access to capital and support for SMEs. Provide € 30 956 million1 to help address big concerns shared by all Europeans such as climate change, developing sustainable transport and mobility, making renewable energy more economical, ensuring food safety and security, or coping with the challenge of an ageing population.

Cancer

For charities, the average budget spent per charity was €21.5 million, and the median spending was €400,000. Among governmental agencies, the average budget spent was €21.4 million, and their median spending was €1.9 million. In 8 countries, there was no cancer research spending by charitable organizations, while in three countries, there was no spending by governments. In eleven countries, charities spent more amount on cancer research than did governments.

Engineering

In Bulgaria, the JEREMIE Holding Fund (JHF) is invested by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and co-financed by 15% by the State amount within the framework of the Operational Programme (OP) “Development of the Competitiveness of the Bulgarian Economy 2007 – 2013”. Under this OP, the Ministry of Economy, Energy and Tourism (MEET), has allocated contributions under the Priority Axis 3, including a national contribution, equal to EUR 349 million for the implementation of the JEREMIE Initiative aiming to improve the access to finance for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) through various financial engineering instruments.
