PARMA CONFERENCES

Parma is a city of 200,000 people, rich with culture, art, tradition and history. Its Cathedral, built in the 13th century on the ruins of an earlier structure, is a renowned example of the romanesque style in the Po valley, with a cupola painted by the artist Correggio in the sixteenth century; also located in the Piazza Duomo is the ancient Baptistery, an octagonal structure made of pink marble, an expression of the transition into Gothic styles. Other important parts of Parma include the Old San Giovanni Pharmacy, Steccata's Church, and the Camera di San Paolo, the Duke's Palace & Park, the Regio Theater, the Pilotta (explained below) and many other sites. Parma is also home to a university that was begun in the ninth century, now with about 20,000 students. While it is an urban center, Parma is also surrounded by beautiful nature, with nearby green hills, fertile countryside, seasonal flowers and plentiful vineyards, as well as the Po River that divides the city in half.

PARMA CITY HIGHLIGHTS

The University of Parma is one of the oldest universities in the world, founded in the 12th century. It is organized in eighteen departments. As of November 2013 the University of Parma has about 32,000 students. The European College of Parma Foundation is a higher education institution which provides academic training for young European graduates in the field of European Union law, economics and politics. The educational program offered by the European College of Parma is a comprehensive, interdisciplinary academic curriculum covering the whole process of European integration.

Market Analysis & Funding for Pharma | Nursing | Immunology | Neuroscience | Cancer | Engineering | Cardiology | Agriculture | Healthcare

Pharmaceuticals

Pharmaceutical spending covers expenditure on prescription medicines and self-medication often referred to as over-the-counter products. It is measured as a share of total health spending, in USD per capita (using economy-wide PPPs) and as a share of GDP. Italy spends 17% of Healthcare spending as Pharmaceutical spending lagging world average by 2%.

Figure 1: Pharmaceutical Spending in Italy

Nursing

Health spending accounted for 9.2% of GDP in Italy in 2012, very close to the average of 9.3% in other countries. Health spending as a share of GDP is much lower in Italy than in the United and in a number of European countries including the Netherlands, France, Switzerland and Germany. The public sector is the main source of health funding in nearly all OECD countries. In Italy, 77% of health spending was funded by public sources in 2012, slightly more than the average of 72% in OECD countries. As in many other European countries, health spending in Italy has fallen in recent years, as part of government efforts to reduce budgetary deficits following the economic crisis. Preliminary estimates suggest that these reductions in health spending have continued at a rate of -3% in real terms in 2013.

Figure 2: Health Spending

Neuroscience

The neuroscience Drug Market for all diseases will Increase $800 Million by 2016. Neuroscience industry demand was worth USD 24.09 Billion in 2013 and is expected to reach beyond USD 30.80 billion by 2020.

Figure 4: Increasing rate of research in Neuroscience (in %)

Cancer

The Italian Association for Cancer Research has been committed to fostering cancer research in Italy, and has gradually expanded to include 17 Regional Committees and over 4.500.000 supporters. AIRC does is to raise funds and give out grants for cancer research. Fund are coming in two forms-50% through national and local events designed for the general public and the business community and 50% through letters requesting support.

Engineering

The European Commission forecasts GDP growth for Italy of 1.1% in 2015 and 1.6% in 2016. The engineering plastics and other market size is projected to reach USD 97.2 Billion by 2020, registering a CAGR of 7.6%. In terms of value, the engineering plastics market size in automotive & transportation application is projected to reach USD 26.5 Billion by 2020, at a CAGR of 8.0% between 2015 and 2020.

Cardiology

The European interventional cardiology devices market was valued at $3.9 billion in 2013 and is expected to reach $6.1 billion by 2018, at a CAGR of 9% during the forecast period. The European interventional cardiology devices market is expected to have a slow growth. Various factors such as increasing peripheral intervention, momentous increase in the number of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) centers, and growth in aging population are the major drivers for the European market. On the other hand, the declining coronary angioplasty procedures and conventional first level medication treatment are considered as restraints for this market.

Figure 6: Cardiology device market

Chemistry

The European clinical chemistry market is growing due to the on-going developments in analytical laboratory automation, the swift progress in various fields of diagnosis such as point-of-care testing, molecular diagnosis, immunoassays, haematology, flow cytometry, and microbiology. Germany commanded the largest share (20%) at an estimated $652.8 million in 2013 and is expected to reach $853.3 million by 2018, at a CAGR of 5.8% from 2013 to 2018. The United States commanded the largest share (89%) of the North American clinical chemistry market at an estimated $3,852.7 million in 2013 and is expected to reach $5,370.5 million by 2019, at a CAGR of 7.2% from 2013 to 2018.

Immunology

The Italian Immunology Sector has made huge improvements in the last few years, growing at rapid pace and currently generating an overall €16.3 ($23.9) billion in yearly revenues, of which €6.3 ($9.2) come from biotech sales. Government funding for Italy's universities has fallen by about €1 billion (13%) since 2009.

Figure 8: Funding for Immunology

Agriculture

Of Italy's total land area of 29.4 million ha (72.6 million acres), 10.9 million ha (26.9 million acres), or 37.1% of the land, were under annual or permanent crops in 1998. Small, individually owned farms predominate, with the majority three ha (7.4 acres) or less. In 2001, about 5% (1.4 million persons) of the economically active population was in the agricultural sector. Despite government efforts, the agricultural sector has shown little growth in recent decades. The imports of agricultural products increased from $19.6 billion in 1987 to $20.9 billion in 2001.

Figure 9. Agricultural Support in Europe

Healthcare

Health spending measures the final consumption of health care goods and services (i.e. current health expenditure) including personal health care (curative care, rehabilitative care, long-term care, ancillary services and medical goods) and collective services (prevention and public health services as well as health administration), but excluding spending on investments. Health spending accounted for 9.2% of GDP in Italy in 2012, very close to the average of 9.3% in OECD countries.
