Uppsala is a university city in Uppland in Sweden, 80 km north of Stockholm. With a population of 158,000 (200,000 in the municipality), it is the fourth largest city in Sweden. The two universities dominate the city, so there are lots of young lively people everywhere. It holds Scandinavia's largest cathedral, originally constructed in the 13th century. The university city of Uppsala lies in the heart of Sweden, 40 minutes from Stockholm and 20 minutes from Arlanda International Airport. Swedish is the national language of Sweden. The Swedish Cancer Society’s core activity is financing research. The Swedish Governmental Agency for Innovation Systems (VINNOVA) distributing about SEK 2,4 billion in 2014, primarily to needs-driven research in the fields of  medical technology, transport, communications and working life. In addition to the agencies mentioned above, several other agencies finance research funding in various areas. In these cases, it is common for a lesser amount of the agency's appropriation to go to research funding.

 

Cardiology

The Swedish Heart-Lung Foundation raises funds and distributes money to heart, lung and vascular research, and provides information about heart-lung disease. The fund supports numerous fields of research connected to myocardial infarction (heart attack), heart failure, vascular spasms, genetic heart defects, stroke, asthma, COPD and emphysema among others.

 

The problem is that both cardiovascular- and pulmonary research lack money. The Swedish Heart-Lung Foundation, which funds the majority of independent heart-lung research in Sweden, awards around 225 million SEK in grants to research annually. That is equivalent to just about 15 percent of the funds applied for. In other words, there is a great need for additional funding and every donation we receive is of real importance.

 

Chemistry

The chemical industry is an important export industry in Sweden, and as one of the basic industries, it provides an important foundation for other industries and industrial development. The chemical industry accounted for approximately 52% of total Swedish exports in 2014-15.

The Swedish chemical industry includes chemicals and chemical products, oil refining, pharmaceuticals, plastics and rubber products, paints and coatings, hygiene products, detergents, agrochemical and other chemical products.
